9. What is the difference between a dental assistant, a dental technician and a dentist?
In order to become a dental assistant, one has to finish junior high school and become an apprentice in a dental clinic or dental hospital for 3 years.
The job profile of a dental assistant is basically to assist the dentist in treatment and to maintain the dental instruments and equipment.
This apprenticeship includes some basic medical and dental lessons, nevertheless dental assistants are not allowed to examine, diagnose, advise or treat patients.

The job profile of a dental technician is basically the production of crowns, bridges and prosthesis with metal, plastic or ceramic.
This apprenticeship also includes a few very basic medical and dental lessons, nevertheless dental technicians are not allowed to examine, diagnose, advise or treat patients.
Please note: In the beginning of the last century in Germany, dental technicians could get the permission to open a dental clinic and even perform some dental treatment by completing further education, which took 6 years. This was abolished 1952!

A dentist, or better DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery), had to pass secondary school, which takes 2 to 3 years after high school, with an university-entrance diploma and study in a dental university for many years. This university studies include general medicine and dental education and covers all dental sciences like surgery, filling therapy, endodontology, periodontology, prosthetics, etc.. Besides, a DDS is obligated by law to do further education regularly.
Only licensed dentists are allowed to examine, diagnose, advise and treat patients!
